Eminent Bengali litterateur Sunil Gangopadhyay is dead


Sahitya Akademi President Sunil Gangopadhyay died today at his at his South Kolkata residence in the early morning following a massive heart attack. Sunil Gangopadhyay was 78 years old and in recent times his health was not doing well. The end came at 2.05 hours.
 Sunil Gangopadhyay is survived by his wife Swati Gangopadhyay and son Sauvik . Sauvik resides in Boston and the body of Sunil Gangopadhyay will be kept in a mortuary till his Sauvik arrives.

Sunil Gangopadhyay was a poet first and then a novelist. Sunil Gangopadhyay became popular with his poetry and then shifted his focus on novels. Recently in several times he expressed his desire to write poems only. Sunil Gangopadhyay has won several awards.
 Sunil Gangopadhyay used many pen names like 'Nil Lohit', 'Sanatan Pathak', and 'Nil Upadhyay'. Sunil Gangopadhyay won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985 for his novel 'Sei Samay' which is simply a research work. Sunil Gangopadhyay won the Bankim Puraskar in 1982 and the Ananda Puraskar for two times, in 1972 and 1989.

Durga Puja, the most famous Bengali festival is going on in West Bengal and all over the World. The news of Sunil Gangopadhyay's death will surely dampen the festival mood of Bengalis.
