Bengali film Kadambari is the most awaited movie of this year. The film is based on a very sensitive issue. Was the relationship between Rabindranath and Kadambari Devi was a platonic one?

Kadambari Devi was wife of Jyotirindranath Tagore – elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore. Relationship between Kadambari Devi and Rabindranath Tagore still remains a topic of discussion for generations. Rabindranath Tagore never denied that he had a unique relationship with his sister– in– law. Rabindranath used to call her ‘Notun Bouthan’.

The relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and his ‘Notun Bouthan’ is always treated as a sensitive issue. Kadambari Devi committed suicide just four months after Rabindranath Tagore's marriage. Director of the film Kadambari, Suman Ghosh feels: "I was not scared to deal with such a sensitive subject. What I felt instead was a huge sense of responsibility. For the first time in the history of Bengali cinema, this subject has been adapted for screen.A lot about this incident has so far remained under the carpet, and I thought the carpet needs to be lifted."

Kadambari Devi was married to Jyotirindranath Tagore when she was only 9 years old. At that time Rabindranath Tagore was lonely in the ‘Thakur Bari’ and the same case was with Kadambari Devi. It took no time to bond the two children together as play mate. After the death of Rabindranath Tagore's mother, the poet started getting motherly affection from Kadambari Devi. Finally the relationship turned into a romantic relationship. Director Suman Ghosh has done research work on the relationship and said "Such was the depth of Kadambari's influence on Rabindranath that at the age of 70, he confessed to Nandalal Bose that many of his paintings of a woman's face were drawn keeping Kadambari Devi in mind."

Audiences are eagerly waiting for the film. We have to keep in our mind that Bengalis are very conservative regarding Rabindranath Tagore. All the truth in the relationship between Rabindranath and Kadambari Devi may not be accepted by them. 

Singer Srikanta Acharya is making his debut in this film. Srikanta is a good singer and the aristocracy in his get up is 100% matching with the character. Best of luck for Srikanta.
