Google dedicates Doodle to Meena Kumari



Today is Meena Kumari's 85th birthday and Google Doodle is dedicated to Meena Kumari. Meena Kumari, the tragedy queen of Bollywood is considered as one of the finest actresses to have acted in Hindi films. Meena Kumari was her filmy name, her real name was Mahjabeen Bano.

Meena Kumari was born on August 1, 1933, to Ali Bux and Iqbal Begum, and passed away at the age of 38 on March 31, 1972. Personal life of Meena Kumari was full of tragedy. 

In film industry, Meena Kumari was a successful actress who won four Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress category. Meena Kumari was the recipient of the inaugural Filmfare Awards (1954) Best Actress Award for Baiju Bawra. In 1955, Meena won the same award for film Parineeta. The third Best Actress Award came in 1963 for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. In 1966, Meena Kumari won her last Best Actress Filmfare award for Kaajal.

Meena Kumari was an alcoholic which eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver. Meena Kumari was a patient of chronic insomnia and was on sleeping pills for a long time. Doctor prescribed a small peg of brandy as a sleeping pill alternative but the actress became addicted to alcohol. Meena Kumari  was fully in the grip of alcohol after her separation from her husband in 1964.

Three weeks after the release of one of the memorable films in Hindi film industry, Pakeezah, Meena Kumari became seriously ill and died on 31 March 1972.
