Real name of Supriya Devi is Krishna and nickname is Benu. Uttam Kumar always used her nickname Benu. Presently she is popular as Benu di.

Supriya Devi died on 26 January 2018.

Supriya Devi was settled in Myanmar with her parents and during World War II she came to Kolkata along with her parents and settled here.

From her childhood Supriya Devi had keen interest in dancing.  She continued dancing in Kolkata also and gradually entered film industry of West Bengal. Chandrabati Devi, an film artist of that time helped Supriya Devi to get chance in Bengali films. Supriya Devi’s debut film as an adult artist was Nagpash. Shooting of this film was done in 1952 but the film was never released. In her second film Basu Parivar, her co artist was Uttam Kumar.  One of the greatest performances of Supriya Devi is in Meghe Dhaka Tara, a film directed by Ritwik Ghatak. Supriya Devi played the role of a refugee girl in this film who shouldered all responsibilities of the family at the cost of all types of happiness of her own life. In another film of Ritwik Ghatak, Supriya Devi played the role of a refugee girl. The film is Komal Ghandhar. She was a very glamorous and powerful actress of her time. Supriya Devi and another famous film actress Suchitra Sen were in Bengali film industry in the same time. Supriya Devi was comfortable in both romantic films as well as in critical characters. In Ban Palashir Padaboli Supriya Devi played a romantic role opposite Uttam Kumar again in Suno Baranari, Supriya Devi was a sex worker. In Shudhu Ekti Bachhar, Supriys Devi portrayed the role of a rich spoiled woman.

Supriya Devi acted in few Hindi films also but ultimately became popular as an actress of Bengali films. 

In 1954, Supriya Devi married Bishwanath Choudhury and their only daughter is Soma. The marriage was not a long lasting. Supriya Devi had a close relationship with Uttam Kumar and till the death of Uttam Kumar they lived together.
