Eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty


Ajoy Chakrabarty,  the eminent Indian Hindustani classical vocalist belongs to the Patiala gharana.

Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty was born in the year 1953 in Kolkata. His younger brother Sanjay Chakraborty is a noted composer and his daughter Kaushiki Chakraborty is also a Hindustani classical singer.

Shri Ajit Chakraborty, father of Ajoy Chakraborty was his first music teacher. Afterwards Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty took training from other maestros like Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Shri Kanai Das Bairagi and  Munawar Ali Khan,  son of Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan.

As a student, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty performed outstanding. From Rabindra Bharati University, he received gold medals in both Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Master of Arts (M.A.).

Awards and recognitions


Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty is one of the renowned classical singers of the Patiala Gharana. He received  Sangeet Natak Akademi Award – 2000 for his outstanding performance. Ajoy Chakraborty has been awarded with Kumar Gandharva national award, this award for music is given to outstanding talented musicians under the age of forty five.

Ajoy Chakraborty has received Best Male Playback Singer also which is rare among the classical vocalists.

Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty has set up a music school, Shrutinandan in Kolkata to train young generation the vocal music of India.
