24 October 2014 is the first death anniversary of legendary singer Manna Dey. Manna Dey, birth name Prabodh Chandra Dey was born on 1 May 1919 and died on 24 October 2013.

Brief Profile of Manna Dey


Manna Dey started his singing career in 1942 and till 2013 he was active. Since 1992, Manna Dey withdrew himself from Hindi film music but continued to sing in Bengali movies, bhajans, gazals and appeared in live performances during 1992 to 2012 .Last live performance of Manna Dey was in 2012 in Mumbai. Last recorded song of Manna Dey was for film Umar in 2006. The song - Duniyawaalo Kee Nahee Kuchh Bhee Khabar was composed by Shamir Tandon and he sang along with Kavita Krishnamoorthy and Sonu Nigam.

In his lifetime, Manna Dey sang duets with singers like Kishore Kumar, Md. Rafi, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Mukesh, Sandhya Mukherjee, Mahendra Kapoor, Talat Mahmood, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Krishna Kalle, Shardha Rajan Iyengar, Arati Mukherjee, Chandrani Mukherjee, Anuradha Pudwal, Hemlata, Minu Purushottom, Bhupinder Singh, K.J. Yesudas, Suresh Wadkar, Kavita Krishnamoorty, Alka Yagnik, Antara Chowdhury, Preeti Sagar, Dilraj Kaur, Yunus Fazmi, Jaspal Singh, Anwar, Manhar Udhas, Joginder and Mubarak Begum.  First music director Manna Dey was his uncle Krishna Chandra Dey in Tamanna in 1942 and the last music composer was Shamir Tandon in 2006.

Manna Dey has sung songs in Hindi, Bengali and different regional languages. The languages are Bengali, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Magadh, Maithili, Assamese, Oriya, Konkani, Siindhi, Gujrathi, Marathi, Kannada, Nepali, Malayalam and other languages.

Manna Dey died of a cardiac arrest at 3:45 pm on 24 October at Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital, Bengaluru. Death of Manna Dey is the end of an era. Mana Dey sung the most critical raga based songs easily which his time singers never dared to sing. The singer never got the desired prestigue and honour from both Mumbai and West Bengal.


Let’s see how Mumbai and West Bengal remember Manna Dey on his first death anniversary. On the date of release of film Happy New Year, will the Mumbai remember the singer of the songs like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Ek Chatur Naar, Zindagi kaisi hai paheli, Tum bin jeewan kaisa jeewan, Yeh Dosti, Yaari Hai Imaan? So far as West Bengal is concerned, we are passing through so much problems, where is the time to remember the legend?
