Why Mithu Mukherjee Disappeared From Film Industry And How Is She Now

 The year was probably 1967-68 and at that time Mithu Mukherjee made her stage debut in Rabindranath's 'Taser Desh' dance drama at Shyambazar Bhatrisangha club's Silver Jubilee Festival. After that Mithu entered Bengali films as a heroine due to her good dancing skills. Mithu's first film was Chitta Basu's 'Sheesh Parbo', which later became the Hindi remake of Amitabh-Hema's 'Bagbaan'. 

Actress Mithu Mukherjee arrived on the silver screen with a youthful look in the seventies. In her form, physique, there was unwavering sex appeal, and again, the combination of a goddess face. In Dinen Gupta's film 'Marzina Abdalla', Mithu became the leading actress in Bengal after playing Marzina in an Egyptian dress. Mithu first came into the limelight as Margina.

Mithu's producer adaptation didn't work anymore. Debashree Roy was also becoming popular after her films like Troyi, Thirty Six Chowrangi Lane. 

In the nineties, Mithu lit up like a torch for the last time.  Film 'Ashrita' starring and produced by Mithu Mukherjee became a super duper hit. Every woman in Bengal watched this film as a house full. 'Ashrita' was the most sought-after film in the VCR era. No other heroine has achieved the amount of hits Mithu's comeback has in a heroine role. 

But gradually Mithu Mukherjee faded away from both Tollywood and Bollywood industry. Presently Mithu Mukherjee stays in Mumbai.

Shriman Prithviraj (1973)

Debut film of Mahua Roychowdhury. Cute Mahua was main attraction of the film and Bengali audiences came to know that a new actress has arrived. At the age of 14, Mahua was so comfortable in front of camera. Her performance including dancing touched everybody. 

Shriman Prithviraj is a Bengali romantic comedy film starring Ayan Banerjee and Mahua Roy Choudhury, and directed by Tarun Majumdar, featuring teenage love. It is the story of the transformation of a young boy's innocent but naughty childhood to an appreciation of the Swadeshi movement and the growth of adolescent love for a girl even younger than him. The comic appeal of the film is natural and free-flowing. 

The leading cast, Ayan Banerjee and Mahua Roychoudhury as the teenage-couple are still remembered for their roles in the film. Moreover, the blend of the pre-Independence political backdrop with the simple love life of the newlywed is excellently portrayed. Story of the film

Kedar Chatujye (Tapas Paul), a very very simple boy, is exiled to his uncle’s house in a small town in Bihar by his father, who is extremely angry with him for being unable to pass his B.A. exams after three attempts. The simple-minded Kedar becomes the butt of all jokes of his cousin Santu's (Ayan Banerjee) gang of friends led by Bhombol Bhattacharjee also known as Bhombolda (Anup Kumar).

Kedar falls in love of Saraswati (Mahua Roychowdhury), a girl with a strong, no-nonsense character who is the elder sister of Santu’s betrothed Beena (Debashree Roy), at first sight. Saraswati even falls in love of Kedar not because of Bhombal's many lies but because of his simple nature. Saraswati’s parents too are impressed by Kedar’s decency and simplicity; they soften up to Kedar. However, Bhombolda and his gang create misunderstandings between the two. A disappointed Saraswati decides to marry a rich boy from Bhagalpur (Kaushik Banerjee). At the end, Bhombolda realises that Kedar has a heart of gold and admits his wrongdoing leading Saraswati to marry Kedar.

In 1980, Mahua Roychowdhury was awarded Best Actress Award for this film from Filmfare Awards East.

Plot

Saheb a joyful, friendly, and kindhearted boy loved to play football. He was very much neglected by his brothers. Saheb's father didn't find any good quality in him. Only his sister-in-law and his only sister Bulti appreciated and took care about him. Saheb had a potential to become a good goalkeeper, but lack of support and care from his family became the main obstacle for his growth. Suddenly Bulti's marriage was fixed with a well-educated family. The budget of the event made Saheb's family helpless. At that time, Saheb sold his kidney and spoiled his football career. No one was aware of his decision. At the day of his sister's marriage when everyone was enjoying, Saheb was fighting for his life. Suddenly his sister-in-law came to know everything and became very upset. All his brothers were imposing allegation on him for that unaccounted money, then his sister-in-law exposed everything and made them quiet. At last, Saheb's father went to hospital and mourned for his neglected child.

This film revolves around Saheb (Tapas Paul) but Mahua is simply outstanding as a sister. We know, in film industry there are few actresses who are famous for playing sister's roles. Like Farida Jalal in Bollywood. Mahua is famous for her romantic and challenging roles. In film Saheb, Mahua proved that in this area of acting also, she is the best.

Rampada a poor farmer of Bengal stayed with his wife and child. Famine snatched their son and Rampada forced to go city for sake of food and money. In such a situation hoarder, Ghanashyam Das exploited his wife Mukta and put her in mess. All such incidents forced Mukta to live in a red light area. Shankar a great patriot and a social reformer worked hard to change the situation. He belonged to the same village where Rampada and Mukta lived. Shankar took the case and after a huge effort, he was able to put them together. Ghanshyam intervened and tried to disrupt their union. The villagers did not accept that and supported Mukta. After a long battle, Rampada got the chance to meet his wife. At last, they managed to start their new life with the help of Shankar.

Aadmi Aur Aurat (1984)

Mahua played the role of an unglamorous village woman and proved her acting power. At that time, Mahua Roychowdhury was tigress of Bengali films. Aadmi Aur Aurat was Mahua's first Hindi film (It is a Hindi telefilm).

A Muslim man and a Hindu woman travel through a jungle. When the man learns about the woman's pregnancy, he decides to accompany her on her journey and helps her overcome all the hurdles.

A man comes to Kolkata to pursue his college education and works part-time as a garage mechanic. One day, he comes across an arrogant, rich girl and eventually falls in love with her.

The film is directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay and Music Director: Shyamal Mitra.

Manoj Mitra plays the role of Kenaram and Becharam (double role). Becharam is an old man and no body cares about him much. One day surprising every body he went out from his house. Becharam tried to commit suicide, but was saved by a road side man called Nagen Panja. Nagen's profession was to supply witness in court in return of money. He found in the news paper that an advertisement was given about Becharam that anyone who will find him out he will get Rs.1000 and therefore he started searching for him. In the mean time Becharam meets with a newly married couple (Mahua and Tapas) who took him home. Kesto is a poor man and was engaged in potery job. Kesto's wife from the beginning addressed Becharam as her father and took care of him. 

On the other hand Becharam's daughter came from Allahabad. The married couple took care of Becharam and he was a bit happy. On the other hand his daughter started quarelling with Deepa about her father and also about the ornaments. Nagen Panja found a man- a vagaband (Kenaram) who was same in looks of Becharam Chaterjee. Nagen insisted this person to go to Kolkata as Becharam Chaterjee and he agreed. In the mean Becharam is happily staying with Kesto and his wife and helping them in their household work and business. When the duplicate Becharam came to Kolkata he was very much praised and taken care but 5000 Rs. was not immediately handed over to Nagen Panja. Suddenly in an incident the duplicate Becharam was identified but forcefully stayed in the house by Nagen. 

By the time a village rich was looking Kesto's wife with bad intentions. Becharam protested and  the village rich man threatened Kesto to return his money which was borrowed by Kesto to make his house. The rich man gave another option - otherwise to make Becharam out of his house. Becharam went away. Becharam came to his original house, every body was suprised to see him back. He took away his pass book and the locker keys of his bank with his wife's photo and went to Kesto's house again, he paid up all Kesto's dues and lived happily with them.

Story of the film

Mahua and Tapas Paul are in love and ready to get married. Suddenly Tapas Paul is diagnosed with brain tumor and his condition starts deteriorating. Engagement of Tapas and Mahua was completed but Tapas tries to separate himself from Mahua. Both the families decide to cancel the marriage. The news of his disease is kept secret, only Tapas's friend, played by Anup Kumar knows it.

Finally everything get sorted. Tapas is cured and happy ending with marriage.

Story of the film

The movie revolves around a girl, named Minati, a very straight forward person due to circumstances, becomes a dancer. Due to ill fate she has to dance with the risk of her life for the treatment of her husband as he undergoes a serious accident. But the husband wrongly accused his wife. She forgives him and starts performing on stage to earn money to cure his illness.

Finally the husband realised his faults.

Mahua is Minati in this film and made the film success alone.

Few words about the story of the film

Story of the film has lots of common with Mahua's life. Mahua worked hard from her tender age to support her family financially and after marriage also her hard and dedicated work helped her family to run smoothly. In her real life she was always suspected for being success and fair looking like 'Minati' in the film Abhimaan. Even few dialogues in the film Abhimaan are interesting. At one one stage of the film Bishu Da (Sukhen Das) of the film 'Abhimaan' says ' The girl is earning money through stage shows (dance) from the age of 16 and after marriage she is earning money for the treatment of her husband' but getting ill-treatments, no sympathy'. Is it just coincidence? Script writer of the film was Anjan Chowdhury and he used to stay just above Mahua's flat at Behala. Burn case of Mahua happened at her Behala's flat. 

In many scenes, it appeared that Mahua is not acting - just reality is coming out from the actress.
