Why Mithu Mukherjee Disappeared From Film Industry And How Is She Now

 The year was probably 1967-68 and at that time Mithu Mukherjee made her stage debut in Rabindranath's 'Taser Desh' dance drama at Shyambazar Bhatrisangha club's Silver Jubilee Festival. After that Mithu entered Bengali films as a heroine due to her good dancing skills. Mithu's first film was Chitta Basu's 'Sheesh Parbo', which later became the Hindi remake of Amitabh-Hema's 'Bagbaan'. 

Actress Mithu Mukherjee arrived on the silver screen with a youthful look in the seventies. In her form, physique, there was unwavering sex appeal, and again, the combination of a goddess face. In Dinen Gupta's film 'Marzina Abdalla', Mithu became the leading actress in Bengal after playing Marzina in an Egyptian dress. Mithu first came into the limelight as Margina.

After that, Mithu also moved to Bollywood. Dulal Guhar 'Khan Dost' is his first Bollywood debut. Do several more pictures. Hema Dharmendra's 'Dil Lagi', 'White Jhoot', remake of 'Holiday Trap' with Vinod Mehra, 'Maya Malhotra' etc.

Mithur decided to go to Bombay to do a Hindi film and probably that was a wrong decision.  Mithu worked in a few Hindi films in a row, but his place was second lead. Once she realized that her place in Hindi films is in a minor role. She came back to Kolkata.

But in Bengal by that time, Mahua Roychowdhury has occupied the top position among heroines in Bengali film industry. Mahua is signing everyone's picture. Mithu's producer adaptation didn't work anymore. Debashree Roy was also becoming popular after her films like Troyi, Thirty Six Chowrangi Lane. 

In the nineties, Mithu lit up like a torch for the last time.  Film 'Ashrita' starring and produced by Mithu Mukherjee became a super duper hit. Every woman in Bengal watched this film as a house full. 'Ashrita' was the most sought-after film in the VCR era. No other heroine has achieved the amount of hits Mithu's comeback has in a heroine role. 

But gradually Mithu Mukherjee faded away from both Tollywood and Bollywood industry. Presently Mithu Mukherjee stays in Mumbai.

The most glamorous actress of Tollywood during the 70's in Tollywood Bengali film industry, Mithu Mukhopadhyay was born on June 19, 1955. Her major works are Marjina Abdulla (1973), Mouchak (1975), Swayamsiddha (1975), Hotel Snow Fox (1976), Ashrita (1990) etc. Ashrita was Mithu's home production.

It is learnt that Mithu Mukherjee now resides in Mumbai and her husband is Chandra Barot, director of Mithu Mukherjee's last film Ashrita.

Mithu Mukhopadhyay worked in films only as heroine and she was never seen in character roles. Mithu Mukhopadhyay is totally unknown to present generation Bengali film audiences.

Forgotten Actors and Actresses of Bengali Films

Many actors and actresses of Bengali films are now wiped out from the mind of audiences. Once these actors were in the front line in industry and media used to cover their news. In this article I have tried to cover some of them.

Mithu Mukhopadhay

Mithu Mukhopadhay made her debut in Bengali films in 1972 with Chitta Basu’s movie Sesh Parba. Mithu Mukhopadhay little bit different from other actresses of that time. Mithu was born 19 June 1955. Mithu Mukhopadhyay studied in St. Thomas School in Kolkata.

Mithu Mukhopadhyay’s first hit film was Marzina Abdullah in year 1973. Mithu was gorgeous in the film. Mithu has acted other films like Mouchak, Shayam Siddha. In both the films, Ranjit Mallick was casted opposite her.

Mithu Mukhopadhyay also acted in Hindi films. Afterwards Mithu Mukhopadhyay became producer and at the age of 35, she performed as a leading lady in film Ashrita which was produced by her.

Gradually Mithu Mukhopadhyay faded away from the film industry. Not in a cine party or filmy show, Mithu is seen.

Anjana Bhowmik

 Date of birth of Anjana Bhowmik is 30 December 1944. Anjana Bhowmik was from Cooch Behar and did her schooling from Cooch Behar. The actress studied in Sorojini Naidu College, Kolkata. 

Anjana Bhowmik made her debut in 1964 with film Anustup Chanda, directed by Pijush Bose. Anjana Bhowmik was paired opposite Uttam Kumar in many films like “Chowringhee”, “Kokhono Megh”, “Nayika Sambad”, “Roudra Chhaya”, “Raj Drohi”.

Anjana Bhowmik got married to Navy Officer Arun Sharma and they are settled in Mumbai. Bengali actor Jishu Sen Gupta is her son-in-law.

Kaberi Bose was a famous actress in Bengali films during 50’s and 60’s. Kaberi Bose was known for her powerful acting and beauty. Date of birth of Kaberi Bose was 28 March 1938. The actress died at an early age of 38 yrs in an accident while returning from Darjeeling.

Some of the famous movies of Kaberi Bose are: Nagar Darpane (1975), Je Jekhane Dariye (1974), Ami Se O Sakha (1974), Aranyer Din Ratri(1969), Shyamali (1956), Madhumalati (1957), Raikamal (1955), Debimalini (1955), Paradhin (1956), and Shankar Narayan Bank (1956).

Arati Bhattacharjee

Arati Bhhatacharya was born in Jamshedpur, Bihar. Date of birth of Arati is 8 November 1951. Real name of Arati Bhattacharya is Bulbul. Arati Bhattacharya started her career in stage. Her first and last stage performance till today is “Nahabot” at the Rangmahal Theatres.

Arati Bhattacharya made her debut in films with a Hindi film in 1971 - Ek Adhuri Kahani, directed by Mrinal Sen. Arati Bhattacharya has acted in many Bengali films with renowned heros but gradually faded away from the industry. Arati Bhattacharya tried her luck in Hindi films but she was not successful in her mission. Arati Bhattacharya became director afterwards and her directorial debut was in a Hindi film “Mashooka”. Arati Bhattacharya married Kunal Shingh, famous actor from Bholpuri films, in the year 1979. Arati Bhattacharya now lives in Mumbai and her son is also a Bhojpuri film hero.

Alpana Goswami

Alpana Goswami is an Bengali actress who is recognised for her work in Bengali cinema.

Alpana Goswami hails from Bandel in Hooghly district and began her acting career in late 1970s. Her first leading role on silver screen was that in Krishna Sudamain 1979. Presently she lives in USA.

Best films of Alpana Goswami are Ashleelotar Daye, Baidurya Rahasya, Rashifal.

Ayan Banerjee

Ayan Banerjee was born on 9 February 1956 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. He is an actor, known for Sriman Prithviraj (1973), Dadar Kirti (1980) and Nabarupa (1992).

Ayan Banerjee is discovered by Tarun Majumder and he has acted in two block busters Sriman Prithviraj (1973), Dadar Kirti (1980) - both directed by Tarun Majumder. It is said that Ayan is a victim of nepotism. Gradually Ayan faded away from film industry and concentrated on his banking service.
